QUESTION NO. 24
QUESTION: Councillor K. Mahon
"To ask the Chief Executive if he can please report re the progress of the attached motion(43689) which was passed at the March Tallaght Area Committee Meeting?"
43689 | Councillor K. Mahon | Tallaght Area Committee | Tallaght Area Committee Meeting - 23rd March 2015 | Motions | 10/03/2015 |
That this Area Committee calls for the establishment of a Special Endeavour Award for Adult Literacy. The award could come in the form of an individual bursary or, ideally, as a financial assist to a local literacy service(s). It could be run on the basis of a written piece by individuals availing of Adult Literacy Services in the County. The award could be funded through the streams available to the Social and Community SPC specified for such purposes. The Committee also respectfully suggests that the" Kieran Swords Adult Literacy Award" may be a suitable title for the award in acknowledgement of Kieran's high regard among Council staff and elected members, and the crucial role Libraries play in education and life long learning. |
REPLY:
Thank you for the suggestion. The Library Department is glad to consider this proposal of a Special Endeavour Award for Adult Literacy. We have approached NALA with the aim of setting up a suitable competition for an individual bursary. I will be in touch with the Social and Cultural Committee with regard to funding the may be available.
The suggested name for the award, however, may not be a runner as having spoken with Kieran’s family, they feel they would prefer his name be linked with some Local History project as this was his primary interest.
