QUESTION NO. 3

QUESTION: Councillor L. O'Toole

"That this Council installs litter bins in the Adamstown area particularly on Station road and along the school route, which currently has no bins."

REPLY:

The Public Realm section is responsible for litter control in all public spaces within the Council’s administrative area.

As part of this service, Public Realm section provides and maintains a network of 650 litter bins on street and in public parks, open spaces and housing areas across the county.

Locations where requests for bins should receive priority for litter bin placements are:

All sites considered suitable for bin placement are subject to capacity of the location to facilitate safe access for maintenance vehicles (side loader).

The site referred to was recently examined.  It was found that there are no bins outside the shops at Station Road/Adamstown Link Road junction and the area was littered at the time of inspection.

As there is an obligation on businesses to clean in the vicinity of their shops and to provide appropriate bins outside their premises the Warden Service will contact the businesses in relation to dealing with litter as it is considered that dealing with the litter at the source may be a better approach.

The area will be reviewed again in a months time and if the litter issue is still problematic the position will be reconsidered.
