MOTION NO. 19

MOTION: Councillor V. Casserly, Councillor W. Lavelle

"That this Area Committee calls on the Manager supports local businesses and groups planning seasonal events and festivities for Christmas 2015, including:

- assistance to local groups organising a Christmas Market; and

- provision of enhanced Christmas lighting."

REPORT:

As the Members will be aware the South Dublin Tourism Strategy has been agreed and launcehd. As part of this strategy the role of festivals and events across the County and year have been identified as one of the chaneels to support the development of Tourism in South Dublin County.

Following on from the work of the SPC Tourism subgroup, a tourism implementation working group has been established under the auspies of the Economic, Enterpise and tourism SPC. This working group includes elected members, officals and industry representatives. This group met on the 13th of May last and agreed to focus on three key issues, marketing, wayfinding and events and festivals. This focus of events and festivals is ongoing and will include how they contribute to tourism and what supports may be approproiate.

With respect to Christmas events these will be considered as part of the broader work of the above working group, however it should be noted that  facilities, such as Chrsitmas lights, are a matter for local businesses. The Councillors will be kept informed of the work of the tourism implementation subgroup, particulaly in relation to events and festivals.
