QUESTION NO.2

QUESTION: Councillor M. Devine

To ask the Chief Executive what is the status of green spaces within residential areas? Are they subject to development(private/social) or are there protected leisure spaces for residents?

REPLY:

Almost all green spaces in residential areas are subject to zoning objective F in the County Development Plan 2010-16.  This is to preserve and provide for open space and recreational amenities.  Under this zoning objective, there are a number of compatible development uses 'permitted in principle', including a community centre and/or recreational facilities.  There are a number of further development types 'open for consideration', including residential.   Irrespective of zoning, any development proposal must be considered on its merits in the context of the suitability of the site and location for the proposal, in terms of the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
