MOTION NO. 6

MOTION: Councillor K. Mahon

That this area committee calls for a report on the suitability of the green field bordered by Homelawns Villas and the Seskin View Rd and to the rear of The Crescent Millbrook Lawns and Homelawns Rd for use as allotments or a community garden.

This would enable the productive use of a strip of land that is generally unused with limited potential due to its narrowness and proximity to existing back gardens.

REPORT:

There are a number of backland open spaces in this general area, some of which are routes for utility services. Some of them are not fit for purpose as open space. If there is a local initiative to have them converted into allotments or community gardens the Council would look favourably on progressing such a project. However a project such as this and within a housing area would have to have local support in terms of a committee to manage the site in partnership with the Council. The Council will undertake a site survey to determine if such a project is physically possible, taking into account soil conditions, utilities on site and access. If there is a local group interested in this project it should make contact with the Council to progress the idea.

The Council is currently preparing a strategy on the provision of allotments and community gardens for presentation to the Elected Members and this are will be considered as part of the strategy.

A site location map is attached to this report.
