MOTION NO.1

MOTION: Councillor J. Lahart

"That the Committee supports investigating some of the commercial options available which might be suitable for the provision of public toilets in some of our public parks - such as Rathfarnham Castle Park."

REPORT:

The provision of toilets in parks and open spaces has long been a goal of the Council and is one of the basic needs that should be available to the public using park facilities. However, the provision of these requires specific resources in order that they are maintained in a safe, clean and acceptable condition for the public. This is not currently possible with the existing resources available to the Council.

The ideal way to do this is - and as mentioned in the Motion - to combine the provision of one facility, e.g. a Café/Restaurant with the provision of toilets. The management of these is then undertaken by the provider of the primary facility. The Council is positively disposed to facilitating compatible facilities being located in our parks and open spaces in order to achieve the objective of toilet provision. This has been done in a small number of locations, e.g. Bancroft Park (Westpark Fitness Centre) and in Rathfarnham Castle Park in association with the Office of Public Works.
