QUESTION NO. 16
QUESTION: Councillor F. Timmons
To ask the CEO to provide a statement on the fact that Dublin City Council is cleaning up the canal with help of volunteers, is SDCC participating as well? would or could this be looked at?
REPLY:
The Grand Canal is in the ownership and under the control of Waterways Ireland. The section of the Grand Canal which runs through the South Dublin County Council Administrative Area extends from just beyond the 7th Lock at the Kileen Road west to the Kildare county boundary approximately 3km west of the 12th Lock at Lucan.
By agreement with Waterways Ireland, South Dublin County Council, under a contract operated by the Council's Economic, Enterprise and Tourism Directorate, maintains the litter bins and keeps the towpath free of litter. All other maintenance works are carried out by Waterways Ireland. If a local group wishes to undertake maintenance works on the canal, they should in the first instance make contact with Waterways Ireland.
