MOTION NO. 5

MOTION: Councillor B. Bonner

That this Committee agrees that the current system for monitoring and addressing the problems of littering, dumping and antisocial behaviour on the canal path greenway has failed to the extent that this fabulous amenity is becoming a no go area for residents in the Clondalkin area.

This Committee calls on the Chief Executive to put in place new arrangements to address these problems.

REPORT:

A major clean-up was carried out last week along the Grand Canal Way – Green Route and all the bins were emptied and litter removed along the length of the route.

The ESB is currently carrying out works along the canal which necessitates temporary closure of stretches of the canal and this work is expected to continue for a number of weeks.  These works have affected the ability to access the canal to empty the bins and remove the litter being dumped there.  Once these works have been completed the bins will be emptied on a weekly basis.

Part of the problem in the accumulation of litter is the increase in the level of domestic rubbish being dumped along the canal and unfortunately it is the local residents who are responsible.  The public’s assistance as always in reporting incidents of illegal dumping is essential in order to keep this valuable amenity free from litter.
