QUESTION NO.23

QUESTION: Councillor E. Ó Broin

Can the Chief Executive upgrade the planning search and view facility on the Council website to provide planning documents in PDF format as well as DjVu as not all users of the website have hardware that is compatible with DjVu.

REPLY:

By means of context to the use of the DeJa Vu format, the Council can advise that the Deja Vu format used by Councils routinely for planning documents in particular is very useful for large format document scans (associated with planning files) which technically yield very large file sizes.  Such file sizes are difficult to access, transmit to the end user, and work with as they consume large quantities of working memory on the viewing devices.  The DeJa Vu format enables such files to be highly compressed and thereby more efficient to transmit across the internet and for end users to work with.

Versions of the Deja Vu browser plug in are available on all major desktop platforms - Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac, and Linux systems.

The Council is in the process of upgrading it's document management system where planning files which are served on the internet originate.  When this upgrade is completed the Council intends to give consideration to altering the formats which are made available to the end user on our website in line with technological advances in this area.  It has not as yet been completely analysed however PDF is a preferred option if the technicalities of the format satisfy the intended purpose.
