QUESTION NO.36
QUESTION: Councillor D. O'Donovan
To ask the Chief Executive if there are any initiatives like a Junior Park Rangers programme to help teach kids the importance of keeping our County Clean?
REPLY:
The Council does not operate a Junior Park Ranger Scheme. Nonetheless, there are a number of Council initiatives in place promoting the concept of keeping our county clean, not just for children but for all age groups in the county. Iniatives include the Social Credits Scheme, the Bulbs not Bonfires Scheme and the Green Dog Walkers Scheme.
These initiatives are generally managed through the Environmental Awareness Officer. In addition, the Council supports other initiatives such as Tidy Towns Groups, Community Cleanups, Bin your Gum campaign, Tackle Litter campaign and national events such as National Spring Clean Week. All of these activities include and involve children.
In addition, environmental awareness forms part of the curriculum and there are a range of programmes specifically targeted at children provided through the Council's Environmental Awareness Programme, including the Green Schools Programme. This is an international environmental education programme, environmental management system and award scheme. In South Dublin 93% of primary schools and 89% of secondary schools are registered in the Green Schools Programme.
