MOTION NO.9
MOTION: Councillor K. Mahon
That this Area Committee calls for the establishment of a Special Endeavour Award for Adult Literacy. The award could come in the form of an individual bursary or,ideally, as a financial assist to a local literacy service(s).
It could be run on the basis of a written piece by individuals availing of Adult Literacy Services in the County.
The award could be funded through the streams available to the Social and Community SPC specified for such purposes.
The Committee also respectfully suggests that the" Kieran Swords Adult Literacy Award" may be a suitable title for the award in acknowledgement of Kieran's high regard among Council staff and elected members,and the crucial role Libraries play in education and life long learning.
REPORT:
South Dublin Library Services support various strands of adult literacy throughout the libraries network and in partnership with other agencies as outlined below:
- Early Literacy - supporting parents and their children as they begin to read
- Conventional Literacy - supporting ongoing literacy through resource provision, activities and events
- Computer Literacy - confident and effective use of computers and the internet
- Digital Literacy - confident use of the range of equipment and services such as smartphones, tablets, cameras, skype, etc
- Information Literacy - finding accurate, up-to-date information from a range of sources
With regards to the proposal to name a Special Endeavour Award for Adult Literacy in memory of Kieran Swords, we wish to advise that a number of suggestions are currently being considered, however this will require a period of time to reflect and consult on the most appropriate initiative to recognise the valuable contribution made by Kieran Swords to South Dublin Library Services.
