COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF TALLAGHT AREA COMMITTEE
Monday, March 23, 2015
QUESTION NO.24
QUESTION: Councillor C. O'Connor
"To ask the Chief Executive to confirm the policy now being pursued by the Council when reports are received by the public in respect of graffiti and will he also confirm that every effort is being made, in each case, to remove the offending graffiti?"
REPLY:
When a complaint is received about graffiti, the location concerned is inspected by the Litter Warden for the area to determine if the graffiti is on public or private property.
If the graffiti is on private property, the owner of the property is written to and requested to remove it as soon as possible. If the graffiti is on public property, the Council arranges for removal. Depending on the type of surface we endeavour to remove it by the use of chemicals or by painting over it.
In a limited number of circumstances, it may not be possible to remove the graffiti owing to difficulties accessing sites.
Should the graffiti be on utility boxes belonging to utility companies, the company concerned is contacted and requested to remove the graffiti.
In the interest of improving the aesthetics of the county, and as part of the development of the new Litter Management Plan, further consideration will be given as to how problems with graffiti on private property may be addressed depending on the strategic location of the property.
