QUESTION NO. 9
QUESTION: Councillor V. Casserly
"To ask this area committee to request the Chief Executive to circulate information to residents by viable communication methods used by SDCC, regarding the proposed trial roundabout on the Newcastle Road Junction, detailing the purpose of this trial, when it will occur, maps, measures being taken to ensure pedestrian safety, measures to be adapted to gauge the effectiveness of the roundabout and impact on traffic flow. Residents would like direct feedback from SDCC to reaffirm it will be removed should it fail to demonstrate improvements?"
REPLY:
When the scheme to provide a pilot roundabout at this location was being examined all local politicians, as representatives of the community, were notified and given a copy of the proposed arrangements. It was explained at the time that it was being considered as a first step in attempting to resolve congestion issues in the area and would last for approximately 3months as it would take that period to ascertain the benefits, if any, that might accrue. It was also indicated that all existing pedestrian movements would be maintained or slightly relocated to facilitate the new scenario. All existing poles would be kept in place and swiched off and bagged so that they could be switched on again on completion of the pilot. It was also indicated that if the trial was successful it would be made permanent.
