COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE
Monday, February 23, 2015
MOTION NO. 5
MOTION: Councillor W. Lavelle
"That this Area Committee calls on the Chief Executive to fully examine a suite of measures to improve road safety and traffic management at Mount Bellew Way, outside Lucan Educate Together NS; including:
- The possible installation of a raised crossing, with associated signage, in place of the existing cross outside the school, replicating the raised crossing recently installed outside Galescoil Naomh Padraig;
- Provision of parallel parking spaces on Mount Bellew Way and the possible redesign of the turning point at the Mount Bellew apartments end of the road; and to examine if such works could be funded as part of an extension of the current Willsbrook Road cycle scheme;
- Provision of a car-parking and drop-off space on the council-owned site next to the school, once the builders compound currently located here is vacated; and
- the repainting of road markings on Mount Bellew Way."
REPORT:
The problem here with car parking at school times has been exacerbated by
1.0 The current road works on Willsbrook Road
2.0 The closure of the right of way from St Andrew's
3.0 The Apartment building works at the junction with Willsbrook road.
The works at the apartments are now largely confined to the site itself and the road works for the Willsbrook scheme will continue for the next few weeks with road crossings and surfacing being confined to weekends. The planning permission for the apartments includes for openings on to a new cycleway and footpath yet to be constructed by the developer.
It is not possible to extend the cycle way contract works as suggested and the allocation in 2015 allows only for completion of the existing contract.
Once road works are completed the area will be cleaned and relined. The provision of a drop off space at the school is a matter for the Department of Education and the school authorities.
