MOTION NO. 5
MOTION: Councillor E. Ó Broin
Cathaoirleach's Business;
That this committee agrees that the Chief Executive should present a report for debate on the issue of footpath repair outlining what happens when a members representation request is submitted requesting repair of dangerous footpaths, how long it takes for such repairs to be carried out, and how Roads works with Public Realm where the cause of the broken footpath is overgrown trees and roots.
REPORT:
The Department of Transport and Sport (DTTaS) and the Irish Pavement Asset Group (IPAG) are in the process of preparing a footpath rating document.
This will entail rating a footpath on either a four or five step condition grading. Roads Dept. will use this document as soon as it is in circulation.
It will mean that after a request to examine a location, the footpath will be graded as follows: (This process is not agreed yet)
Grading 5 Footpath in very good condition Will not be reexamined for 12 months
Grading 4 Footpath in good condition Considered for next years footpath programme
Grading 3 Footpath in reasonable condition Footpath added to next years programme
Grading 2 Footpath in poor condition Footpath will be repaired this year if additional resources are available
Grading 1 Footpath has serious trip hazards Emergency repairs will be carried out.
When the cause of a footpath defect is due to tree roots, Roads liaise with Public Realm to remove the tree and then Roads Dept. repair the footpath.
