MOTION NO. 170

MOTION: Councillor B. Leech, Councillor K. Mahon, Councillor M. Murphy

That the County Development Plan emphasises forms of Transport other than the Car.

REPORT:

National and regional policy documents, such as Smarter Travel - A Sustainable Transport Future 2009-2020, the (Draft) Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy 2011-2030 acknowledge that current transport trends are unsustainable and to meet future travel demand change is needed. These policies place a major emphasis on changing travel patterns and behaviour to reduce car dependence in favour of more sustainable modes of transportation, such as walking, cycling and public transport.

In response to national and regional policy the County Development Plan 2016-2020 prioritise the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. Several Policy Objectives will be developed in this regard. South Dublin County Council has also committed, via its Corporate Plan 2015-2019, to prepare an Integrated County Mobility Plan and work with national agencies to provide for all modes of transport to create a more physically connected county.

It is recommended that this motion is adopted.
