MEETING OF DEVELOPMENT PLAN MEETING

MOTION NO. 206

MOTION: Councillor P. Foley

Cycle routes which are independent of existing roads should feature in this county development plan. Significant capital investment should be earmarked to develop cycle routes which keep cyclists and motorists apart i.e. along the canal, the Dodder etc.

These routes would be capable of taking significant increases, safely, of cyclists but would require cross county co-operation with each of the other local authorities.

REPORT:

South Dublin County Council worked in close consultation with the National Transport Authority (NTA) to develop a County wide cycling network. The County wide network was integrated with those of adjoining Counties and incorporated into the NTA’s Greater Dublin Area Strategic Cycle Network. This document identifies a hierarchy of primary, secondary, feeder routes and Greenways for the GDA. This includes Greenways along the Rivers Dodder, Liffey and Camac and the Grand Canal.

The design of cycling facilities will also be guided by detailed national design guidelines such as the National Cycle Manual and Design Manual for Urban Roads and Streets. .

Recommendation

It is recommended that this motion is adopted.
