MOTION: Councillor W. Lavelle
12th Lock, Lucan
That this Council directs the Chief Executive to retain the current recognition of the special importance of the area around the 12th Lock, Lucan; and to include appropriate policies, objectives and actions to enhance the area as a recreational and amenity zone, to protect and conserve the rich natural and cultural heritage of the area to protect of natural habitats and ecological resources along the Grand Canal and Griffeen River.
REPORT:
The area of the 12th Lock includes a number of structures that are listed as protected structures and the area is also within a proposed Natural Heritage Area. This affords protection to the area under Planning and Development Legislation and Wildlife legislation together with general Development Plan objectives in relation to the protection of such built and natural heritage areas.
The Draft 12th Lock Masterplan (2013) was presented to the March 2013 Lucan Area Committee Meeting following comprehensive local analysis of issues and public consultation. The draft plan includes a number of objectives that set out to enhance the area as a recreational and amenity zone, to protect and conserve natural and built heritage and to protect biodiversity.
Recommendation
It is recommended that this motion is adopted.
