QUESTION NO. 14

QUESTION: Councillor D. Looney

"To ask the Chief Executive for an update on the proposed River Poddle flood works, and to make a statement on the matter?"

REPLY:

The River Poddle Flood Alleviation Scheme

The Scheme will develop the flood risk management options in the Poddle Options Report which was produced by the OPW as part of the Eastern CFRAM Study.

The options include hard defences; sealing manholes; upstream storage and diversion of flow.

The Poddle rises just north of the Institute of Technology Tallaght and it discharges into the River Liffey at Wellington Quay. It flows mostly in open channel in South Dublin and where it enters the City at Kimmage the river flows mostly in culverted sections.

SDCC is the lead authority for this scheme and the scheme is included in the Council's capital programme.

The scheme is funded by the OPW.

A detailed design and tender documents need to be prepared before construction can commence.

A Draft Design Brief was submitted to the OPW for approval on the 9th December 2014 and it is expected that approval will issue shortly.

The Council will then procure consultants to carry out the detailed design and tender documents so that construction can commence in 2016.

In the meantime the Council's drainage maintenance crew is continuing to ensure that the river channel and screens are kept free from debris.
