MOTION NO. 7

MOTION: Councillor D. O'Donovan

"That the Chief Executive investigates the viability of setting up a soccer or rounders street league for this AC. During the 80's there was a local street leagues which had teams of age groups from 8-12 and 12-15 from various streets play against other streets /estates on greens in the community. Played in the evenings from 5pm - 9 pm and it served many different purposes including keeping kids active and outside, helping kids from different estates to socialise while creating a sense of community pride in their estate or street while preventing kids getting involved in anti social behaviour etc."

REPORT:

Unfortunately the Council does not have the resources to deliver a rounders street league. It is noted however that it is a sport in the Dublin and National Community Games programme. This programme is likely to be supported if the community contacted the Dublin Community Games office to develop such an initiative.

Members should note that the Sports and Recreational Office in the Council has agreed to roll out a soccer street league during the months of May / June in conjunction with the FAI community development officers.

The Council currently deliver a very successful "Late Night League" soccer programme for youths between the ages of 13-18 yrs.  This programme is in partnership with the FAI and the Gardaí Síochána.  The league is rolled out during the winter months of November and December and again during the Spring months of February and March in 4 venues around the county; Lucan, Clondalkin, Tallaght and Collinstown.  The programme attracts over 400 youths each weekend to participate in this larger type Street League event.

The Spring 2015 programme commenced in Tallaght Astro Park on Friday 6th February from 9-11pm for a 4 week duration.

If the community contact the Sports and Recreational Office directly they can be advised of the steps necessary for their participation in the soccer programmes.
