MOTION NO.3
MOTION: Councillor E. Higgins
That the Chief Executive provides a report on litter activity in the Baldonnell area and details on how this on going problem can be addressed.
REPORT:
In 2014, the Council's Litter Warden received twenty one (21) complaints of illegal dumping/litter in relation to the Baldonnell and Brownstown areas, all of which have been investigated by the Litter Warden, resulting in the issuing of one (1) litter fine and one (1) notice under the Litter Pollution Act 1997, as amended (The Act).
These areas are patrolled on a regular basis and all incidents of illegal dumping are interrogated for evidence and appropriate enforcement action taken, where possible in accordance with The Act. Unfortunately, it is proving more difficult to retrieve evidence in relation to the identity of the polluters as personal information is often removed or shredded.
Members of the public are continually urged and encouraged to support the Council in taking the appropriate enforcement action by making reports to the Litter Warden for investigation and by providing evidence where possible. Members of the public can make reports of illegal dumping and littering through the following channels:
There were 52 cleanup tasks in 2014 for Baldonnell Lane.
Planned / scheduled litter picks are undertaken in the area on a fortnightly basis.
The Baldonnell area is checked every 2 to 3 days as dumping in the area tends to be sporadic or occurs in clusters. These checks result in cleanups as required.
The Litter Management Plan 2011-2014 is under current review. This review will be considered by the Environmental SPC on 3rd february 2015 and it will also inform development of a new amended plan for 2015-2017 which will identify specific objectives in relation to littering and illegal dumping.
