MOTION NO. 3

MOTION: Councillor A-M. Dermody

"That the Chief Executive consider increasing the number of zebra crossings especially around areas where you have a high footfall such as shopping centres, schools and churches. The age profile of the people in our area are either older/senior people or parents with young children. I am specifically referring to Rathfarnham Shopping Centre where I have had both older people and parents with young children describe how difficult it is for them to cross from Fairways over to Rathfarnham Shopping Centre.   It is accepted that there is a limit on the budget for speed controls/traffic management but one solution which would not cost too much is zebra crossings. I would like for you to perhaps use this motion to provide an insight for all Councillors, into the various traffic management solutions and the costs associated with each. Please consider and report back."

REPORT:

The provision and operation of Pedestrian Crossings in the County is kept under continuous and on going review. The over-riding consideration is pedestrian safety and convenience, i.e. pedestrian crossings facilities should be located where there is sufficient demand to warrant a crossing point and where it is safe to do so.

Should the motion be passed a presentation can be made to the Committee outlining the various designs and types of crossings available, where they can be appropriately used and a cost estimate for the installation of each type.
