QUESTION NO. 6
QUESTION: Councillor W. Lavelle
To ask the Chief Executive to provide a detailed report on the financial performance (i.e. incomes, costs, level of operating deficits/surpluses, etc) in 2013 & 2014 of the swimming pool/leisure centres at each of Clondalkin & Tallaght; and to further report on the financial performance & balance sheet of the South County Dublin Leisure Services Ltd. company?
REPLY: In 1997 a management company was established by the Community Service Dept to regulate the operation of the Lucan Sports Centre and the Clondalkin Swimming pool. The company, South County Dublin Leisure Services Ltd was also awarded the management of the Tallaght Leisure Centre in 2006 by competative tender.
Audited figures are available for 2013 and the trend for 2014 would suggest a similar outcome.
2013 2012
Turnover 2,654,044 2,653,901
Administrative expenses (2,880,674) (2,984,661)
SDCC grant 60,000 60,000
Staff numbers 98 103
Number of Customers 515,000 505,000
In overall terms the Clondalkin site now operates with a small surplus and the Tallaght site makes a loss. The Council also offsets the commercial rates in respect of the facilities. Overall there is an operating deficit. The new All Weather Pitches are scheduled to open in January 2015 at TLC which will help address this deficit.
In addition the Community Dept funds a portion of the repairs/maintainance costs:
Clondalkin Tallaght Total
2013 46,743 28,023 46,743
2014 41,788 * 102,819 144,607
* includes repaint of TLC and major repairs to plant.
