QUESTION NO. 1

QUESTION: Councillor P. Gogarty

"To ask the Chief Executive if he will consider the application for a long term lease on land under Council ownership by Palmerstown Boxing club and bring deliberations on this request to members before any final decision is made regarding proposals to sell this land; and if he will make a statement on the matter?"

REPLY:

The site at Old Lucan Road, known as the Tony Kearns Motors site, in which the above Boxing Club has expressed an interest, was acquired by the Council in January 2005 under the Derelict Sites Act 1990, following the failure of the owners to carry out works to render the site non-derelict. As is provided under the Act, the owners were entitled to seek compensation from the Council in respect of the site and the matter was eventually referred to arbitration, prior to the matter being settled for a substantial sum.

The Council has over the years proposed the site for residential development with a view to achieving a social and financial return for the costs incurred in the acquisition of the site.

The site was one of a number of sites discussed at a meeting of the Organisation and Procedure Committee on 24th October last at which it was agreed that the site would be marketed for sale subject to a design brief. In view of the location of the site which is in a predominantly settled residential area and having regard to the costs being carried by the Council following the acquisition of the site, it is proposed to continue with the preparation of the design brief and the marketing of the site for sale.
