QUESTION NO. 23

QUESTION: Councillor C. O'Connor

To ask the Chief Executive to confirm what plans he has to continue to encourage and promote volunteerism throughout the county?

REPLY:

South Dublin County Council has a dedicated Community Development Section which works to support and develop community activity throughout the County.   Volunteers play a vital role in the life of this County and their work and dedication is recognised by those who receive much needed services as a result of their work and by the Council.

The encouragement and promotion of volunteerism is progressed in partnership with many other organisations throughout the County and in particular with the South Dublin County Volunteer Centre.  Volunteering in itself provides a reward, however the Council is looking at ways to publically acknowledge the work that the thousands of volunteers do and recognise how their work improves the quality of life for all of of us living and working in South Dublin County.  The Community Development team will work with the newly formed Social and Community Strategic Policy Committee to look at ways of recognising our existing volunteers and highlighting their work and also identify opportunities  to encourage and support new volunteers.  The newly formed Public Participation Network will be represented on the SPC and their local knowledge and experience of volunteerism will help in this process.
