MEETING OF SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL

MOTION NO. 23

MOTION: Councillor M. Genockey

That this council commits to celebrating Black History Month in 2015, by way of holding events or awareness raising projects. Ireland became the fourth country internationally to celebrate Black History Month. As in other countries, Black History Month Ireland takes place in October. The celebration would be a good way to put forward positive portrayals of the African community and celebrate its history and contributions to Ireland and in particular for us, to South Dublin County.

REPORT:

Members should note that this Council devotes considerable resources to Social Inclusion Week, the planning for which takes place many weeks before the actual events. Social Inclusion week 2014 was extremely successful with all events booked solid despite increases in the numbers of events planned. The Community Services Department will examine how the thrust of the motion could be reflected within its existing programmes and will consider the matter further in conjunction with other departments such as Arts and Libraries.

If the motion is passed, the manner in which Black History Month could be celebrated in South Dublin will be referred to the Social and Community Strategic Policy committee for further consideration as part of its work programme for 2015.
