COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF TALLAGHT AREA COMMITTEE
Monday, November 24, 2014
MOTION NO. 8
MOTION: Councillor C. King
"That this Committee calls on the Chief Executive Officer to proactively engage with the hospitality sector in the greater Tallaght area such as Hotels and B&B's with a view to temporarily housing some of our Homeless applicants who currently are housed in similar temporary accommodation on the North side of Dublin who then have to make long commutes very early every morning to bring their children to school here in Tallaght".
REPORT:
Homeless Emergency Accommodation is provided on a regional basis through Dublin City Council as the lead authority.
There are approximately 400 families in commercial hotels and B&B accommodation across the Dublin region.
South Dublin County Council is currently accommodating 34 families in commercial hotels and an additional 25 families in private B&B accommodation sourced through Centralised Placement Service.
In so far as possible, SDCC try to place families within the locality or within access to LUAS / Bus transport system. However, accommodation of this type may not always be available as bed placement is running at full capacity.
Dublin City Council has access to 38 commercial hotels / private B&Bs across the Dublin region and is consistently endeavouring to secure additional accommodation through proactively engaging with the hospitality sector however, the local authority can not compel any commercial hotel / private B&B operator to accommodate our homeless applicants.
