MOTION NO.16

MOTION: Councillor L. O'Toole

"That the Council conduct a feasibility study on the installation of an open and public all weather hard surface football/basketball court adjacent to Weston Hockey pitch or/and adjacent to playground, Griffeen Park, Lucan."

REPORT:

Multi Use Games Areas (MUGAs) have been provided in a number of local parks and open spaces around the county to provide local, informal all-weather recreational opportunities close to residential areas. Griffeen Valley Park is a Regional Park and one of the functions of the Regional Park is to provide for organised active recreation on a scale that is not possible in residential areas. For this reason, large facilities such as the athletic track, all-weather hockey pitch, tennis courts, large playground and skate park have been all been provided in Griffeen Valley Park.

However, given the extent of the residential development around Griffeen Valley Park, an initial examination of the park will be undertaken to identify possible locations where a MUGA or similar type facility might be provided. The feasibility of the idea will also be raised for discussion with the Council's Sports Officers and the Sports Partnership Facilitator.
