South Dublin County Council Crest

MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE

MOTION NO. 17

MOTION: Councillor W. Lavelle

"That this Area Committee thanks Council staff for facilitating the recent meeting with local businesses as part of the Ballyowen Castle initiative; and requests the Chief Executive to:

- present a detailed report, for discussion, on measures to address the problems of dumping at the bring banks and to ensure more regular and effective litter cleansing of roads in the area; and to

- arrange for an audit of the area similar to the multi-departmental staff audits of villages areas already carried out as part of the Villages Initiative."

REPORT:

The bottle banks at Castle Road/Ballyowen Shops are listed for cleaning on Monday and Friday of each week. All bottle banks listed are prioritized.

The audits referred to in the question were undertaken as part of the Villages Initiative and included staff resources from Planning, Architects, Roads and Public Realm.  These were very time-consuming and reflected the scale of the Village Initiative and the budget allocation for capital projects involved.   Regrettably as there is no permanent team involved there is no provision to allow for a survey of this type as requested.

The Council is particularly conscious of acqute problems countywide in relation to dumping at the bring banks, and is currently looking at options which can deliver robust environmental monitoring and enforcement solutions that are sustainable and cost effective.   We will keep members updated in this regard.
