MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

MOTION NO. 3

MOTION: Councillor E. O'Brien

"That this Committee having regard to previous motions on the issue and the recent decision of the County Council to fund pavilions to be shared by local sporting groups in our parks take immediate steps to commence an upgrading of the Community Centre at Griffeen Valley to a top quality multi purpose centre in line with other such facilities around the County."

REPORT:

The Lucan Leisure Centre has provided a wide range of activities to address the needs of the Lucan community over the last 30 years. The Council carried out an energy upgrade of the facility in 2013 in order to enhance the level of service provided at the facility.

The provision of additional space in the current centre which will augment the current programme of activities will be examined in conjunction with other demands on the Council’s limited resources so that the centre will be in a position to further meet the community need of the area.

The sports pavilions provided in other locations in the County were facilitated by the Council but were funded through the Sports Capital Programmes administered by the Department via a series of applications made on a joint venture basis by individual clubs who acted jointly together to achieve their overall provision. However it should be noted that some improvements to the Centre will also be considered in the context of the 2015 Revenue Budget and its associated Capital programme.
