MOTION NO. 9

MOTION: Councillor G. Kenny

That the Chief Executive looks into the possibility of allowing on a pilot basis the opening of the barriers on the Grand Canal Green Cycle route at particularly times in the mornings and evenings to allow flow of access. This would allow for quicker journeys and a more user friendly environment for all users of the cycle/pedestrian route.

REPORT:

The Grand Canal Way, Green Route Scheme specifically made provision for the installation of some 20 kissing gates along the 8.5km route from 3rd Lock, Inchicore to 12th Lock, Lucan, Newcastle Road.

The purpose of these kissing gates was to prevent, as far as possible the unauthorised access of motorised vehicles and animals as these could present a danger to the pedestrians and cyclists using the canal.

Following representations from cyclists the kissing gates were subsequently modified to provide easier access for cyclists along the route and these modifications were generally welcomed and no complaints have been received in recent times in relation to the kissing gates.

The Council does not have the resources at this time to facilitate the opening and closing of these 20 kissing gates along the 8.5km route on a daily basis, however the situation will be monitored.
