QUESTION NO.17

QUESTION: Councillor E. Higgins

To ask the Chief Executive to provide a report on the ongoing efforts to address the problems of illegal dumping and overgrown trees in Brownstown and Baldonnel, Newcastle, Co. Dublin

REPLY:

Illegal Dumping:

South Dublin County Council's team of five (5) Litter Wardens investigate all complaints of illegal dumping and littering as well as patrolling all areas within the Council's administrative area, focusing on black spots.

The Litter Warden patrols the areas of Brownstown and Baldonnel regularly and all incidents of illegal dumping are interrogated for evidence and appropriate enforcement action taken, where possible. The matter is then referred to the Public Realm Section for removal of the dumped material.

To date in 2014, the Council has received sixteen (16) complaints of illegal dumping in relation to the Brownstown and Baldonnel areas, all of which have been investigated by the Litter Warden, resulting in the issuing of one (1) litter fine. It is proving increasingly difficult to secure evidence in relation to the identify of polluters as personal information is often removed or shredded.

Members of the public are urged and encouraged to support the Council in taking the appropriate enforcement action by making reports to the Litter Warden for investigation and by providing evidence where possible.

In relation to the overgrowth, the Area Engineer has a contractor engaged in hedge cutting in the rural areas. This location will be added to the list of hedges to be trimmed.
