QUESTION NO. 16

QUESTION: Councillor J. Graham

To ask the Chief Executive for a progress report on the provision of a dog park in Rathcoole Park?

REPLY:

To date, dog runs have been provided in Corkagh Park, Clondalkin; Griffeen Valley Park, Lucan and Tymon Park, Tallaght and they are generally considered to be operating in a satisfactory manner.

In order to provide a dog run, an area of about 5,000m2 (approximately the size of a football pitch) is required as a minimum. This is to ensure that there is sufficient space for a number of dogs to run free and use the area at the same time. This is one of the reasons why dog runs have only been provided in the larger Regional Parks in the county.

Once the area has been enclosed to provide a dog run, it is no longer available for use by other park users. This is in contrast to other facilities, such as playing fields, which are available to the public when not in use for games.

There are no proposals at present to extend the provision of dog runs to other, smaller parks in the county such as Rathcoole Park.
