QUESTION NO. 22
QUESTION: Councillor C. O'Connor
To ask the Chief Executive if he would provide funding for a comprehensive Roads Maintenance Plan for this County which would
a) Eliminate impediments to traffic and danger to pedestrians arising from Overhanging Tree Limbs, brambles and other vegetation encroaching onto our roads and,
b) Audit and achieve proper routine and scheduled maintenance of all roadside drainage systems/water tables annually?
REPLY:
A) As the majority of trees and hedges form part of a property boundary, responsibility for maintenance of this rests with the property owner/occupier. However, Roads Department operate a hedge cutting programme which takes place in the Autumn of each year. Additionally, Roads staff monitor the condition of any overgrowth which may cause restrictions to sightlines or otherwise cause a threat to safety.
B) Routine maintenance of drainage gullies and water cuts is carried out by Roads Dept on an ongoing basis and Roads Inspectors ensure specific attention is paid to areas where flooding has been a problem in the past. Responsibility for culverts and river screens rests with the Environment Department who also carry out maintenance works on an ongoing basis.
