QUESTION NO.13
QUESTION: Councillor Martina Genockey
To ask the Chief Executive to provide a report on the installation of covert CCTV at some litter blackspots in the county, as reported on in December, and to give feedback on the success of the CCTV in these areas and the possibility of rolling this out to other litter blackspots in the area?
REPLY:
As reported in response to motion 12, meeting of Tallaght Area Committee (1) on the 16th December 2013, a covert CCTV camera was to be installed in an acute litter black spot in West Tallaght.
The covert camera was installed by the Council's CCTV contractor on the 22nd January 2014 in an area in West Tallaght and was in place for a four (4) week period. The camera was checked at different intervals throughout the four (4) week period by the contractor and no evidence was retrieved from the camera. The site itself was last checked for dumping activity on the 18th February 2014.
The contractor returned to the site on the 24th February 2014 to remove the camera, and found that the camera and battery pack had been stolen from the site.
South Dublin County Council has two (2) Rapid Deployment CCTV cameras available to it. The Enforcement & Licensing Section is currently working with the CCTV contractor in assessing locations, which have been identified as black spots, with a view to locating the cameras in areas that are most likely to yield results from an enforcement perspective.
