QUESTION NO. 52
QUESTION: Councillor Fintan Warfield
To ask the Chief Executive Given the increase of illegal dumping across the county, will South Dublin County Council explore the possibility of re-introducing an occasional junk collection scheme, currently enjoyed by residents in Dublin city?
REPLY:
The Council last provided a junk collection service in 2008, it was brought to an end at that time due to the substantial cost involved in providing the service. The service at that time provided junk collection for approximately 20,000 houses per year at a cost of €500,000 per year. This had Council housing areas included on a 3 year rota for junk collection, while private housing estates were included on a 5 year rota. Temporary staff, 15 to 20 in number, were recruited for a 15 week period to provide the service and these were supervised by a small number of regular staff. It was not possible to provide the service within normal staff resources.
There are no plans at present to reintroduce this service due to the extremely high cost associated with it, a cost which would also have increased since the service was last provided in 2008 due to increasing waste disposal costs among other things.
