QUESTION NO.27

QUESTION: Councillor W. Lavelle

To ask the Chief Executive for an update in response to the repeated requests for an extension of the Village Cleaning Service to the weekends, in particular in relation to weekend litter bin-emptying?

REPLY:

The Environmental Services dept is anxious to resolve the current situation whereby no cleaning and litter bin services are provided in the County's town and village centres between Friday lunchtime and Monday morning on a normal weekend, or Tuesday morning on a bank holiday weekend. The Council wishes to introduce a service at weekends in the town and village centres in order to alleviate the litter problem which arises currently from the lack of weekend service. The service must continue to operate within the current budget provided for cleaning services within the public realm section.  It is now proposed to introduce a weekend service similar to that which operated prior to June 2009 at which time the service was terminated due to the overtime cost involved.  That service was provided early on Sunday mornings and was targeted at cleaning and servicing of litter bins in the town and village centres.  The towns and villages previously serviced on Sundays were Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan, Palmerstown, Rathfarnham, Templeogue, Rathcoole and the Walkinstown Roundabout area and it is proposed that the weekend service will be restored in those areas.  It is hoped to introduce the service commencing on Sunday July 20th.
