QUESTION NO 7.
QUESTION: Councillor D. Looney
To ask the Manager to state how many inspections of private rented accommodation have been conducted on behalf of South Dublin County Council, year on year, since 2009; to state how many prosecutions have arisen; and to make a statement on the matter?
REPLY:
The following table outlines details of inspections of private rented accommodation in the county from 2009 to end of Q1 2014.
Dwellings inspected | inspections carried out(including revisits) | Prosecutions pending | |
2009 | 831 | 998 | _ |
2010 | 917 | 1150 | _ |
2011 | 877 | 962 | _ |
2012 | 880 | 1087 | _ |
2013 | 1832 | 2147 | _ |
2014 - Q1 | 762 | 890 | 2 |
To date the number of dwellings for prosecution is limited to 2 cases as in nearly all cases issues of non compliance are resolved through agreement and where necessary a series of warning letters and revisits.
In 2013 the Council achieved over a 100% increase on the number of dwelling units inspected through the development of a bespoke IT system for inspection management and through further interdepartmental arrangements between Housing and Architectural Services to facilitate dedication of staff to the inspection process. It is planned, within existing resources, to continue with this enhanced inspection process to secure improvement in the standards of private rented accommodation in the county in accordance with compliance requirements.
