QUESTION NO. 5
QUESTION: Councillor D. Looney
"To ask the Manager to report on the changes to traffic flow following the recent alterations to signalling at the Spawell Roundabout, and to state future plans for the junction given the high volumes of traffic backed up to the Orwell Roundabout and beyond?"
REPLY:
The changes to the signalling have resulted in approximately a 30% improvement in the time available for cars to exit the Wellington Lane arm of the junction. However, this improvement is not sufficient to alleviate the long queues which occur at peak times and provides only marginal improvements. To combine with this measure it has been recommended that a new section of the Wellington Lane Cycle Track is constructed for a distance of 130m to provide a two lane entry from beyond the Spawell entrance. This will tie into the upgrade works already completed and the road markings on the approach and on the roundabout will also be improved following the recent study carried out. The works will be carried out immediately following design and procurement in the next few weeks.
