MOTION: Councillor M. Duff

That this Committee calls on the Manager to provide public benches adjacent to large open green spaces or at ring roads in locations such as Kilnamanagh, Kingswood, Belgard, etc to provide comfort for our elderly pedestrians.

REPORT:

The provision of public benches on the larger open spaces and along main roads in Kilnamanagh, Kingswood and Belgard areas would have to be carefully considered in view of the fact that very often public seating in such areas can become a focus and a congregating point for unwanted anti-social behaviour. However, some potential sites in these areas could be indentified in consultation with local residents and seating could be provided on a trial basis, subject to funding being available. If problems arise after the seats are installed, these can be removed or relocated, as necessary.
