MOTION NO. 23
MOTION: Councillor T. Delaney
That the Manager as a matter of priority puts a plan in place to control the severe litter & dumping problem on the Grand Canal Green Route
REPORT:
The Council continues to ensure that every effort is made to remove litter and dumping as speedily as possible along the Grand Canal Green Route.
The main cause of this is the dumping of household rubbish into and beside the litter bins along the route. People have been observed emptying wheelie bins into the Canal. This is done at night when it is difficult to recognise the individuals concerned.
Whenever an identification can be made the matter is referred to the litter warden.
Due to the limited recourses available the bins along the Green Route, which is nearly 8 kilometres in length, are emptied at least once a week in three sections. When this is being done a litter pick is also carried out.
The Council will continue to monitor the level of litter and dumping along the canal to determine how best to deal with the situation, which may possibly have to include the removal of the bins. The Councillors will be kept informed of progress on this matter.
