To ask the Manager to provide an update on Wi-fi rollout in Council community, recreation and parks facilities, as mandated in previous motions; and on Wi-fi usage in our Villages, and to make a statement on the matter?
REPLY:
South Dublin County Council has made available or facilitated free public access wifi at the following locations:-
All SDCC Libraries:-
Community Centres:-
Other:-
Public Wi-Fi facilities are available at all of the above locations, free of charge to public users.
Wifi in our Villages
Roll out of wifi to our villages in conjunction with local business communities continues. The following villages have been completed and are operational:
Official launches to be organised for the Rathfarnham and Newcastle Village Wi-Fi services in due course.
We are making steady progress to develop Wi-fi in the other village locations including Clondalkin, Tallaght, Rathcoole, Palmerston and Saggart. This will conclude the current wi-fi roll out programme, but the council will continue to support wi-fi rollout where practical in the future.
In terms of use of the facilities, strong use has been recorded in areas like Lucan which is well established and has a reasonably large population whilst newer sites have an expected lead in time. In general the Council can report to having recorded up to 850 unique users (approx) accessing the facilities provided in the villages on a daily basis.
