MOTION NO. 7
MOTION: Councillor A.M. Dermody
"That the Manager provide an overall assessment of the growing issue of littering in the Stocking Avenue area of the Ward. That the Manager include in the Report to the Committee how the additional €138,000 released from the Department of the Environment under the Anti-Litter and anti-Graffiti Awareness Grant Scheme is going to be spent by the Council and that some of this funding be earmarked towards tackling the on-going and escalating general littering along Stocking Avenue, with reports of full bin bags of rubbish along with discarded items of household furniture such as dirty mattresses being dumped in the area. This follows an accusation from Residents that the Council take too long to take action and the argument is made that if the Council were to act more efficiently then the area would not be a little black spot. Is it possible to include Stocking Avenue in the weekly regular litter picking/handcart routes?"
REPORT:
Anti Litter & Graffiti awareness grant
The criteria for selection of suitable anti-litter and graffiti awareness projects are set out by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government. Projects/activities should seek to promote greater public awareness and education in relation to litter and/or graffiti, and should, as far as possible, have a particular focus on involving schools and young people and on voluntary initiatives by community and environmental groups. The maximum grant available in any individual case may be up to 70% of the overall cost of the project, with the balance being met by way of local contribution. The scheme will be advertised shortly. The Council's litter and cleaning schedules for Stocking Avenue provide for inspection and clean ups on a fortnightly basis. Additional clean ups may be carried out following receipt of notifications of dumping incidents through the Customer Care System and these are normally carried out as unscheduled works, as they arise. In view of the issues which have been highlighted in the motion, the general frequency of clean ups in this area will be reviewed and particular attention will be given to maintaining this section of road to a high standard of cleanliness in the future.
