QUESTION NO. 10
QUESTION: Councillor B. Bonner
To ask the Manager for a report on the ongoing problem of dumping and fly tipping at Knockmeenagh and St Bridget's Cottages.
REPLY:
In 2013, the Council's Litter Warden Service investigated 11 complaints received in relation to illegal dumping at Knockmeenagh and St Brigid's Cottages, which resulted in 3 fines being issued under the Litter Pollution Act 1997, as amended.
The Council's Litter Warden Service has investigated 10 complaints in relation to illegal dumping in these areas to date in 2014. No enforcement action could be taken due to lack of evidence as the dumped material contained no personal information relating to the polluter, with personal information having been removed or shredded.
All reports of illegal dumping are investigated by the Council's Litter Warden Service and dumped material is interrogated for evidence. Where evidence is found, the appropriate enforcement action is taken under the Litter Pollution Act 1997, as amended. Where there is an on going problem of illegal dumping and littering in any area, local residents are encouraged to support the Council in taking the appropriate enforcement action by making reports to the Litter Warden for investigation and by providing evidence where possible and testifying in court.
Additionally, residents are encouraged through the medium of the Council's Social Credit Scheme to seek rewards for community based initiatives, such as community clean ups.
