COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE

MOTION NO. 14
MOTION: Councillor G. O'Connell
"That this Committee requests the Manager responsible to assist Palmerstown Boxing Club in whatever way it can in securing a permanent suitable premises for their worthwhile activities and in recognition of the service they provide in the area."
REPORT:
The Council is committed to supporting as diverse a range of sporting activities as possible, and welcomes the establishment of a new boxing club in the Palmerstown area. The club is presently operating from the local Parish Hall. The club is a comparataively new one, and it may be a little premature at this stage to be considering the establishment of a permanent premises. However, the Community Department will make contact with the club and establish what its needs and constraints may be. One of the primary constraints that may cause difficulty is that it is difficult for a boxing club to share a premises with another club or activity group because their equipment, which is substantial, does not lend itself easily to being dismantled and stored on a daily basis.
The Council built Neilstown Boxing Club a couple of years ago, but this construction involved a considerable amount of central government capital funding. Such a level of funding is not available at present, but the Council through the Community Team will see if it can identify a more suitable premises for the boxing club.
