MOTION NO.8

MOTION: Councillor M. Devine

That the Council report on littering and loitering on the walkway/underpass from Brookmount Estate towards Firhouse(direction of Weir) which will be discussed by this Committee.

REPORT:

The pedestrian underpasses at the N81/Tallaght Interchange on the M50 in the vicinity of Brookmount Estate are subject to ongoing littering, dumping and anti-social behaviour. The cover and shelter provided by the underpasses enables large groups of youths to engage in the abuse of alcohol and drugs particularly at night and at weekends and the activity sometimes includes the lighting of fires and burning of wheelie bins etc. As a result of this activity the footpaths and cycletracks at the underpasses are regularly strewn and littered with broken bottles and the remnants of burnt wheelie bins, which causes a serious nuisance to cyclists and pedestrians.

The underpasses at this location were inspected recently and were found to be quite clean although there was some broken glass found on the footpath/cycle track at the underpass located nearest to Firhouse Weir. This entire site was recently cleaned by the Public Realm Section. The area will continue to be closely monitored in the future and steps will be taken to ensure any litter, glass or dumped material is removed on a weekly or fortnightly basis, as the need arises.
