Item 1        Confirmation of Minutes of Meeting held on 10th September 2013 

The minutes of the meeting of the Committee, which was held on 10th September 2013, were proposed by Cllr Cosgrave and seconded by Cllr Dermody

 

Item 2        Report on Library Service on potential options for1916 Commemoration  

The Chair Councillor Paddy Cosgrave welcomed Mr. Kieran Swords, Senior executive Librarian to the meeting. 

Mr. Murphy outlined the progress made to date with this item and reminded Members that they had agreed to consider the parameters for considering issues such as budget options, suitability of locations and alternative artistic commissions. Mr. Murphy also indicated that it was agreed that the Library Service would prepare a report on the context for the celebration of the centenary and that this report would be presented to today's meeting of the Committee. He then introduced Mr Swords to the meeting and asked him to summarise the report the Report which made reference to: 

Cllrs Cosgrave, Duff, Hannon, Walsh and Dermody raised a number of points relating to the report and outlined a number of suggestions for further research and development. Mr. Swords and Mr. Murphy responded. 

It was AGREED that further research would be carried out in time for the next meeting of the Committee and that this would enable the Committee to set parameters for considering issues and developing a strategic policy approach.

Item 3        Report on Schools Library Service 

Mr. Murphy introduced the background to this report which had arisen following the initial consideration of a motion to the Council which was referred to the Committee for consideration. It was agreed that a detailed report on the work of the Schools Library Service would be presented today. Mr. Swords then made a detailed presentation on the work undertaken through the Schools Library Service, which focussed on: 

Cllrs Cosgrave and Hannon raised a number of queries regarding the presentation and Mr. Murphy and Mr. swords responded.
