COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF TALLAGHT AREA COMMITTEE (2)

MOTION NO. 8
MOTION: Councillor M. Devine
That this Committee requests the Manager to provide further safety measures for the Charlie O Toole Bridge
REPORT:
Charlie O'Toole Bridge connects the area of St Dominics'/Old Bawn with the commercial and surrounding area of Tallaght village reducing the walking distance from just over 1km to 350m. By design the bridge removes the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles on the busy N81 and it is fully accessible. The bridge crosses the N81 Tallaght ByPass and adjacent stream. The current structure replaced an older bridge at the same location. The bridge is enclosed on its main span offering extra protection from items falling from the bridge onto the road beneath.
During hours of darkness the bridge is lit by adjacent street lighting. Two lights on the N81 are located over the bridge on each side of the N81. A third light is located at the south side of the bridge over the approach to the bridge and steps. The level of lighting will be examined to see if it can be enhanced.
CCTV (An Garda Síochána) points can be seen at the bridge and the lighting levels are adequate for operation of the CCTV cameras which have been used by an Garda Siochana. There are a number of trees in close proximity to the bridge which may be impeding visibility and are currently being examined for pruning.
A further report will be brought to the next TMM.
