MOTION NO. 10
MOTION: Councillor T. Delaney
That this Committee requests the Manager to outline what action is planned to address the ongoing litter/cleansing issues in and around Clondalkin Leisure Centre and adjoining parkland.
Clondalkin Tidy Towns have been very active over the past 18 months and deserve huge credit but need support particularly having regard to specific local references in this year's Tidy Towns Report.
REPORT:
A significant amount of work has taken place in Clondalkin Park car parks since the summer months. A lot of the work was designed to target the littering issue which had developed and become problematic in recent times. Initial work during October included the flailing back of overgrown vegetation in the Nangor Road car park and removing areas where litter was being dumped and accumulating. A number of shopping trolleys and other miscellaneous items had been dumped in the Camac River and an excavator was brought on site to remove these items.
A second phase of works is currently ongoing and includes additional pruning in both car parks in an effort to open up the area and make them less attractive to dumping. The works will also provide a higher level of passive surveillance to discourage such actions. A number of other actions will be carried out during December and early in the New Year. These actions are as follows:
· Removal of leaves, litter and debris from the grass area on the left side of the entrance
· Removal of graffiti from the security cabin
· Removal of graffiti from the walls in the car park
· Replanting a beech hedge against the wall between the Nangor Road pedestrian entrance and the security hut
· Repair stone kerbing /dwarf wall around the perimeter of the car park
· Clean up base of shrubbery in the Nangor Road car park
· Selective thinning of trees at the bottle bank end of the car park
· Remove 3 ESB poles behind the wall in the car park
· Remove section of overgrown shrubbery an the left and right of the approach to the Camac River bridge
The condition of the bring banks and the level of dumping at the site will be monitored.
