MOTION NO. 2
MOTION: Councillor M. Devine
That this Committee consider practical support to business owners in Tallaght Village to revamp their shopfronts and establish a "Good Shop Front Award". Emphasis given to bilingual signs.
REPORT:
The Council, in conjunction with South Dublin Chamber, has in place a Business Support Programme and The Corporate Policy Group is provided with an update on the Programme every month. This contains actions relevant to urban villages and the retail sector. Retail support will continue to form an integral part of Business Support for 2014 and the Programme will be a central part of the budget discussion process for 2014. Proposals for awards such as those raised in the motion will be considered in the context of these discussion..
Supporting Tallaght Village as part of the County Town is also a central part of the Council's Villages Initiative. Workshops on shopfront design are being recommended as an action of this Initiative.
Any proposal for signage incorporating Irish will continue to be looked at favourably, as provided for in the South Dublin County Development Plan 2010-2016 (Policy S36, 'Signs on Shopfronts and Other Business Premises'). The possibility of funding from Foras na Gaeilge in 2014 being made available for shopfront signs in the County incorporating Irish will also be examined.
